Abstract
This lecture reports on a study of lectures! The particular focus is going to be a lecture in health science, and we’ll look at how the lecturer makes meaning in spoken language and body language, alongside images on slides. Drawing on systemic functional linguistic (SFL) theory, we’ll see how the lecturer’s language supports the students’ learning of the scientific knowledge. We’ll see how the lecture involves dynamic shifts in the way the field is presented, and how this helps the students move from the shared here-and-now world of the lecture theatre to the uncommon-sense knowledge that resides in written texts.
