Federation & the Capital of Australia

In 1901 the Australian colonies federated to form the Commonwealth of Australia. The Union Jack continued as the national flag, taking precedence over the Australian red and blue shipping ensigns gazetted in 1903.

Before the Australian Capital Territory was created out of New South Wales in 1908, Melbourne was the interim capital. In 1913 the federal capital was named “Canberra”. Parliament House opened in Canberra in 1927.
